Penny for the guy

Coming events cast their shadows before earlier every year, or so it seems,

and these youngsters were out in Bideford’s High Street on Saturday with their guys in anticipation of November 5th. But perhaps there is a special excuse this year in view of the political fireworks of recent weeks!

Lots drawn to prevent dog fight

No complications when Northam pets go to school

Children at Northam County Primary school drew lots last week to prevent a fight – a dog fight in fact!

The children were invited to take their pets to school, the visit to coincide with the launching of a branch of the Panda Club – a junior section of the World Wild Life Youth Service – at the school.

9 October 1964 Lots drawn to prevent dog fight

But amongst the cats, kittens, tortoises, white mice, guinea pigs and cage-birds there was only one lone dog – a white poodle. The headmistress, Mrs M.A. Crombie explained: ‘We decided to have just one dog so that we wouldn’t have any fights in school. The children with pet dogs drew lots.’

Boys from Bideford school complete Ten Tors

These are the six boys who made up the Bideford County Secondary School patrol

that took part in the gruelling Ten Tors expedition on Dartmoor. They finished the 35 mile walk covering ten tors in under 26 hours’ walking time allowed and each received a medal and certificate. Ten Tors is a test of map and compass reading ability, stamina, commonsense and initiative.

5 June 1964 Boys from Bideford school complete Ten Tors

The boys are (left to right) Brian Smith (15) of Fremington; team leader Stuart Lane (15), Kevin Stach (15), Christopher Brackstone (15), David Hughes (14) and Roger Humphrey (15), all of Bideford.
