Town council to retain house

No sale of Springfield House

Bideford Town Council have declined to sell Springfield House to Devon County Council. The Town Council were told by the Borough Surveyor Mr H.J. Denne that because of the proposed harbour extension and the expanding trade of the cattle market, they should retain it for their own use.

12 February 1965 Town council to retain house

The Town Clerk (Mr L.B. Galliford) said the County Council were seeking a site for a handicapped persons’ centre and an old people’s home.

Photo mural in Bideford bank

From the steps of the Bideford branch of the Westminster Bank

one can look down the Quay to Bideford’s famous 600 year old bridge. That visual atmosphere has now been pictured inside the banking hall. This week a 12 foot long photographic mural has been erected.

4 December 1964 Photo mural in local bank

The photograph was taken by Castle Studio, Torrington, and enlarged by a specialist firm. The mural was fixed to the wall by Messrs. Shapland and Petter and then came the finishing touches by Mr R. Newbold, the photographer, seen at work in the picture above. Watching him (left) is Mr K.E. Taylor, the branch manager.

They never miss a game at Torrington

Veterans William Reed, 90 (right) and Tom Cudmore, 83,

have been Torrington supporters for years and still never miss a match, come rain or shine.

6 November 1964 90 and 83 they never miss a game

Mr Reed says that Torrington’s best team played soon after the first world war and can remember practically every player who has turned out for Torrington.

His friend Mr Tom Cudmore also never misses a match, come rain, hail or snow.
