Competitions at Appledore

Special coronation prizes are being offered at Appledore for the best decorated street, house and shop.

29.5.1953 Appledore Coronation

The winning street will receive £2 which is to go to augment that street’s public tea, and coronation souvenirs will be awarded the winners of the other two sections of the competitions. During the afternoon of Coronation day children’s sports are being staged in the Paddock at the Holt by permission of the Hon. Denys Scott and Mr Hector Jewell. Dancing on the Quay is planned under the direction of Mr J E Boyles, who is also organising the dance at the Appledore Hall. Sandwiched between the dancing will be the bonfire and fireworks. 

The Coronation Committee is under the chairmanship of Rev A E Green and the joint hon. Secretaries are Mr J H Dryer and Mr W Goss. 

The 1st Appledore Company of the Boys’ Brigade have planned a special Coronation effort. They will be entertaining over 80 Appledorians who are over the age of 70 to a Coronation supper and concert.

Increased Meat Ration

21.5.1918 meat ration World War 1

The Ministry of Food announces that, owing to the larger arrivals, it has been possible to release considerable additional supplies of frozen meat, and it has consequently been decied that, as from Sunday last until further notice, 8d worth of uncooked meat may be purchased in respect of each of the two coupons per week available for butchers' meat.

A proportional increase in respect of other butcher's meat and offal has been advised to Food Control Committees.

Langtree

Miss Lucy E Andrew, a Devon County Boarding Scholarship winner from the day school, is doing herself and parent school credit at Barnstaple Grammar School.

In her Easter examination she came first in her form, and secured 79 per cent of the aggregate total of marks obtainable. She secured full marks for arithmetic and algebra. 

A very pleasant whist drive in aid of club funds, was held in the Church Room on Thursday last. The Committee responsible for the arrangements were Messrs W Furst, B Box, W Ford, W Brownscombe and H Walters. The winners were Mr J Huxtable, Mr W Pett (Shebbear), Miss Jone (Hartland) and Miss Pett.
