Up-to-date Bideford!

New roller for Bideford streets

The newly-purchased hand operated vibrator roller of Bideford Surveyor’s department was doing a ‘good job’ of road patching in Market Place last week. It won its spurs in the re-making of Cooper Street which was a first-class result and proved the common-sense of the right tool for the work.

1 August 1952 Up to date Bideford

Weighing only 6 cwt. the roller using its vibrator can exercise pressure of up to 12 tons, it is claimed.

What the television camera saw at Abbotsham

Camera at Abbotsham church fete

The sun could not shine on a prettier sight than the dancing of the children of the Church School at Abbotsham Church fete last week. This, and good work at the skittle alley and on the stalls, caught the eye of the visiting television camera, recording the scene for a feature programme in September.

Allhalland Street – then and now!

Street view in 1900

The photos above show Allhalland street of 50 years ago, and when compared with the recent photo below, it will be noted that there has been little structural change but a great increase in the number of little shops of varying interest.

25 July 1952 Allhalland Street then and now

In the centuries that have passed this was the street so well-known to the sailors who used the port and to the townspeople . Long before the Quay as at present was built, it was along Allhalland Street the people went from the High Street to the Town Hall, the Grammar School, the Parish Church and the Bridge.
