Taw Development Scheme - £8,500,000

View of Taw and Torridge estuary

This arial photograph gives an excellent general perspective of the Taw and Torridge Estuary including the site at east Yelland where a generating station is being erected at a cost of £8,500,000 and will take seven years to complete.

Do you recall the old windmill at Northam?

Demolished in 1922

Memories of the old windmill which once stood off the road between Northam and Appledore have been revived by the recent demolition of Chanter’s Folly. The mill stood in a field known to this day as ‘Windmills’ which lies on the Appledore side of the lane leading to Bidna off the main Northam to Appledore road just past Knapp House. The tower fell into disrepair and became a danger to cattle wandering around its base and even inside.

The windmill tower was of brick on a stone base. A good deal of the base remains but the brick walling, which was some three feet thick, was later used to build a sea-wall under Watertown farm which can be seen today.

Bideford 73 year old’s championship display

Grown on his allotment

Everyone at last week’s annual show of Bideford and District Horticultural Society and Allotments Association was talking about and admiring the magnificent leeks and other vegetables grown by 73 year old Mr Roland Davis of 18 Torridge Street, Bideford E.

Mr Davis, known to a host of friends as ‘Pinwire’, is seen in the photograph above proudly displaying some of his ‘wonder’ leeks and the trophy awarded to the exhibitor gaining most points in amateur and allotment holders’ classes in the show. Mr Davis’s prize-winning vegetables were grown on his allotment at Nutaberry.
