THE NATIONS REMEMBRANCE - POPPY DAY

Poppy Day Remembrance
 

FIELD OF REMEMBRANCE will be open on The Quay, outside of Bideford Amateur Rowing Club, by the Mayor and Chairman of Torridge District Council at 11am on Friday, November 10.
REMEMBRANCE SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 12. Assemble at the Town Hall at 2.10pm to be ready to accompany the Town Mayor and Mayoress to the saluting point on the Quay outside the Post Office where the salute will be taken from the Parade which will depart from the Quay at 2.30pm.
The Parade followed by the Civic Party, will proceed to the Assembly Hall of the Stella Maris Convent School where the Service, conducted by Rev Father D F Collin of the Church of the Sacred Heart, will commence at 3pm.
The members of the Town Council will be robed and decorations will be worn.

WREATH LAYING CEREMONY AT THE WAR MEMORIAL, CHUDLEIGH FORT. The Town Mayor, immediately following the conclusion of the above service, will proceed to Chudleigh Fort to lay the Council's Wreath at the War Memorial and guests are invited to continue with the Civic Party for this Ceremony. The Town Mayor will appreciate your support at these ceremonies.

Home on compassionate leave from Italy, where he has been serving with local gunners, Gunner Kenneth Leslie Rendall, called at the "Bideford and N. Devon Gazette" office to bring greetings from local men in his unit and to say how they were all looking forward to the happy day when they will all be home again. He stressed how greatly the boys appreciated mail, and papers from home.
A native of Bideford, Gunr. Rendall's home is now in Okehampton where his wife, formerly Miss Winifred Mary Wills, resides at 18 Park Row. A Territorial since 1933, he was mobilsied on the outbreak of war and has been serving continuously ever since, the last two years being overseas, taking part in the Sicilian and Italian campaigns. Underneath his Regimental shoulder flash he wears the Maple Leaf awarded to local gunners in recognition of their services in the fording of the Rapido river. The unit has been closely associated with the Canadians in the 8th Army. He was formerly batman to Major Wellington Jones, of Barnstaple.

A members of Lavington O.B.S.A., he is also well remembered for his association with Bideford Amateur Rowing Club, skittles at Bideford Liberal Club, cycling and football etc.

For 57 years a resident of Clovelly, where he kept a gift, art and souvenir shop for 56 years, Mr George Stephen Reilly, of 'Hearemai' Westward Ho! has died at the age of 77.

For a number of years he was a member of the Clovelly Committee of the Royal National Lifeboat Institution and, as a farewell tribute, the lifeboat crew in uniform were bearer at the funeral at All Saints' Church, Clovelly, and the coxswain lit the "Safe home" flare at the graveside. Mr Reilly was born at Fulham, his father being the portrait artist, John Reilly.

In the First World War, Mr Reilly served in the Royal Flying Corps and during the last war he was a member of the Home Guard.
The funeral service was conducted at Clovelly by the Rural Dean, the Rev. E B Bridger (Vicar of Northam), in whose parish Mr Reilly had been residing. The Rector of Clovelly, the Rev. R O H Eppingstone, assisted. The organist was Mr A R Fisher. Family mourners attending were Mr G Reilly son; Mrs M Thompson daughter; Miss E Reilly sister; Angela, grand-daughter; Miss O Cole, Mrs L Segar, nieces.
Unavoidably absent were; Mr C Reilly, son; Miss D Reilly, sister.
The bearers were Messrs. G Lamey, C Shackson, P Shackson, A Lamey, B Abbott and T Cruse.
