Huntshaw TV Mast

New TV mast

Five hundred feet high and standing at Huntshaw Cross, which is 677 feet above sea level, this new mast relaying ITV programmes can be seen over a wide area of the Torridge and Taw Valleys.

12 January 1968 Huntshaw TV mast

Use of this new slender landmark will remove black sports in North Devon where neither the Caradon Hill nor the Stockland Hill transmitters relaying the Westward programmes are receivable at good strength.

Emergency ferry services

Ferry services quickly improvised

Amphibious vehicle ferry services were quickly improvised by the RCT Army unit at Fremington when Bideford bridge became unusable. Except for a period immediately before and after high tide, this involved vehicles and passengers negotiating extensive stretches of very clinging mud, particularly at the East-the-Water slipway near the school, where the photograph was taken.

19 January 1968 Emergency ferry services

A temporary jetty was therefore built out from the former goods station yard over the mud to the firmer sand and enabled crossings to be made at any state of the tide. On the west side landing and departure were at the steps opposite Bridgeland Street.

7 April 1961 Happy Days

The opening of the play field in time for the Easter holidays has been welcomed by parents of young children living in the vicinity which is a long way across busy roads from other open spaces.
