Tomorrow night’s skittles broadcast from Bideford

First direct broadcast skittles match

From the Maltscoop Inn alley in Cooper Street, Bideford, tomorrow evening what is believed to be the first direct broadcast skittles match in the BBC West Region will take place as part of the regular sound broadcast feature ‘Sport in the West.’

It will be provided by a light-hearted challenge match between a team representing Bideford and District Skittles League playing on this alley, and the Bath and District Skittles League playing on an alley in Bath.

4 July 1958 Tomorrow nights skittles broadcast

In the photograph (left to right) the local team consists of: Seated – C. Lyle (Littleham), J.P. Cleverdon (Penpushers), E. Glover (Northam). Standing – L. Elston (Fairy Cross), C.G. Metherell (Penpushers), W. Hockin (Abbotsham).

Signed scroll memento of Queen Mother’s visit

Queen Mother visits Lundy

Bearing the signature of Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother, which she signed during her informal tour of Lundy on Sunday afternoon, this scroll on vellum becomes the island’s proudest possession.

16 May 1958 Signed scroll memonto of Queen Mothers visit

The scroll is the work of Mr John Dyke of Fairy Cross, the island’s artist, and on the side panels he has included drawings of some of the most notable features of Lundy. The lower half of the scroll (not included in the picture) contains the names of residents and those closely associated with the island.
