  • Christmas Eve at the Front

An interesting letter has just been received by Mrs Packer, of Broadclyst, from her husband, Corpl Packer of A Company, 1st Battalion Devonshire Regiment, who is serving with the Expeditionary Force in Northern France. In the course of a letter he describes a remarkable incident which occurred on Christmas Eve between the British and German trenches.

For crying out loud!

Champion Bert takes the mike

National Champion Town Crier Bert Waldron ‘cheated’ in Torrington on Saturday morning. He jumped into a loudspeaker van and toured the streets ringing his bell and making his announcements using a microphone.

9 January 1959 For crying out loud

He had, however, a good excuse, for although he has the country’s champion voice after retaining the national Town Crier’s title at Hastings, the gale-force wind in Torrington made his task of a clear announcement difficult. So he rang and called over the microphone in Mr Tom Squire’s loudspeaker van.

Bideford’s new market opens next week

£40,000 project at Hansen’s field

Next Tuesday brings the official opening of Bideford’s new cattle market at Hansen’s field, constructed at a cost of just over £40,000. The market takes the place of premises situated between Honestone Street and Meddon Street, erected in 1898, enlarged in 1926 and 1935 and now sold to the North Devon Meat Marketing Society.

23 September Bidefords new market opens next week

The photograph taken from the entrance to the new cattle market, shows the main buildings housing the auction ring and covered accommodation for certain classes of stock. Some of the open cattle pens are seen on the left.

Bideford regatta

River's greatest sporting day of the year

Rowing rivalry, water ski-ing thrills, a sunny afternoon, epitomising the glory of the river’s greatest sporting day of the year at Bideford Regatta.

9 September 1960 Bideford regatta

The Quay and east bank, the old bridge, and other vantage points were lined with spectators. General opinion was that this year spectators were more numerous than in some recent years.
