First election for Landcross 22nd June 1979

First election for Landcross 22nd June 1979

first election for LandcrossThe tiny parish of Landcross goes to the polls for the first time ever on July 5th to elect just one parish councillor.  Mr Sherborne, who is 76, is well known to the Bideford electorate where he has made at least 15 attempts, only one successful, to get on both borough and district councils.

There are three candidats for one vacancy.  Standing against Mr S Turner of Spinney Cottage, and Mr J W Stevens, a newcomer to Landcross.

Landcross Appeals Won and Lost

Landcross Appeals Won and Lost

Mr W J P Turner has lost an appeal against the refusal of the local planning authority to allow him to convert a barn near Landcross to a farmhouse but has won another appeal against refusal to allow him to erect a dwelling adjoining 'Hillsborough', Landcross.

Landcross

Landcross 01

Landcross, or Lancras, in the hundred of Shebbear and in the deanery of Hertland, lies about two miles and a half from Bideford. The manor belonged, anciently, tot he family of Beaumont, from whom it passed to Basset, and from Basset, by marriage, to Pomeroy. It was afterwards in Giffard; Sir John Rolle died seised of it in 1706; it is now the property of Lord Rolle, who is the patron of the rectory. In the parish-church is the monument of Anthony Giffard, lord of the manor, who died in 1649. General Monnk appears to have been a native of this village; he was baptized at Lancras, December 11, 1608.
