World War 1

Horwood and Newton Tracey

18.5.1918 Horwood World War 1

Miss Pennell examined the scholars of the Council School in religious knowledge on Wednesday morning.

Special intercession services for the war were held at St Michael’s Church, Horwood, and also at St Thomas a Becket’s Church, Newton Tracey, on Sunday last.

Gunner G Gill (RFA), only son of Mr Gill, Hunters’ Inn, Newton Tracey, had been sent to a Bournemouth hospital, suffering from a severe wound in his left foot. Gunner Gill had been in France about six months.

A successful whist drive and dance, organised by Mrs E Cawsey, ‘Prospect’, in aid of the British Red Cross, took place at Newton Cross House, by kind permission of Mr J Paton. There was a large attendance, and a goodly sum was raised. Mr James Oatway, Lovacott, was an efficient MC. The prizes for the whist drive were given by Mesdames Dene and Balman, and Mr H Symons. The winners were: Miss Daisy Youatt, Mr E Cawsey (playing as a lady); Miss W Brace; J Andrew; Coates; W Hooper. Miss Rocky (Huntshaw) presided at the piano during the dance.
