Buckland Brewer Methodists

Harvest festival services were held at Buckland Brewer Methodist Church recently, which had been tastefully decorated with gifts of fruit and flowers by women members, helped by the Youth Club.

26.10.1962 Buckland Brewer harvest

Morning service was conducted by Rev Donald Cox, of Appledore, and evening service, in which Church of England friends joined, by Rev J Owen Clutterbuck. Mr F Babb played at both services.
A children’s gift service was held in the afternoon, when Mrs Clutterbuck received the gifts and spoke to the children. Collections at this service was for the Freedom from Hunger Campaign, and £5 will be sent from the Sunday school.

The Monday evening service was followed by a faith supper, convened by Mesdames T Brown and W Prance. The gifts were then sold by Mr C Babb.

Max Factor

Heifer Is Changing Her Sex

When Pansy, a three year old Fresian heifer owned by Mr Tom Gill, of the Beeches, Buckland Brewer, showed a tendency to develop somewhat unladylike habits and failed to show, as she should have done, signs of approaching motherhood, Mr Gill consulted a veterinary surgeon.

28.6.1963 heifer

His diagnosis: she is changing her sex.
Pansy still gives three gallons of milk daily, but her ‘moo’ is changing to a bellow and she tends to show more than a passing interest in the other members of the dairy herd.
An AI heifer, she produced her first calf, a bull, normally.
Says 50 year old Mr Gill: “I have never before known anything like this and no farmer to whom I have mentioned it has known a similar case”.
