Record breaking scorer, Mike Grigg, is honoured by Rugby Club

An inscribed tankard, in recognition of his notable scoring last season when he created a new individual record of 252 points – over a hundred more than the previous best – has been presented by Bideford Rugby Football Club to Chief’s full back Mike Grigg.

1965 Rugby Club Mike Grigg

Mike, a 14 stone farmer from Monkleigh, has just completed his eighth season with Bideford, first playing for the Chiefs soon after leaving the North Devon Technical College.
Before the club president, Mr Terence Bird, presented the tankard, the chairman, Mr Mervyn Bird, said of Mike’s score ‘It is a truly magnificent effort by any standard’. Proposing a toast to the Devon Rugby Football Union, Dr R A Cooper claimed that the main advantage Bideford had over many other teams was that they played as a team and to this was added classical, text book rugby, with the ball being thrown about a lot. Responding to the toast, Mr B W Rogers, referred to the problem of joint use of the Sports Ground.
Proposing a toast, the headmaster of Grenville College, Mr J R Crabbe, said it was an excellent thing that Bideford could field three teams each Saturday.
Reference was made to the loss sustained by the deaths of Mr Arthur Chope and Mr Norman Chope, two brothers who were founder members of the club. A minute’s silent tribute was observed at the beginning of the dinner.
