Bideford Rugby Club Notes

Bideford Chiefs, 9pts – Tiverton, nil

3.12.1954 Rugby Chiefs rugby

In conditions which suggested forward play, the handling of the Bideford team turned out surprisingly good and, in fact, the tries came from handling movements and not from forward rushes as might have been expected.
The clean, consistent hooking of G Woolf gave the Chiefs an initial advantage of which the backs made good use. C Davis, wing three-quarter played a fine game and scored two of the tries; the first coming from an orthodox three-quarter movement and ending when he threw off three defenders and touched down in the corner.
Ray Sawtell, intercepting and breaking through, made Bideford’s second try. A Hoare was backing up well and took his pass to beat a defender and score. P Day, at centre, played a good game and in drier conditions might have been able to make more use of his breakthroughs. The third try came again from a three-quarter movement; this time the ball going loose for C Davis to dribble over the line and score.
Many penalty kicks were taken by both sides and the Chiefs seemed to make too much use of the short punt ahead instead of the long kick down field or for touch which the conditions favoured.
This was a very good win for the Chiefs and now means that they won their last five games.
