America’s tribute to ‘J.H’

‘One of golf’s immortals’

A big surprise came to Mr J.H. Taylor, former Open golf champion on five occasions, when a special envoy arrived to present to him an illuminated scroll bearing the signatures of some 150 of America’s ‘senior’ golf professionals as a tribute to ‘one of golf’s immortals.’

Buckland farm workers to receive long-service awards

Forty years of service

The end of another day on the farm and shepherd and cattleman – Mr Fred Brock, on the left, and Mr Alfred Prance – stop to exchange news at Bowden Farm, Buckland Brewer and to discuss the visit they will be paying to the Royal Show at Nottingham to receive Royal Agricultural Association awards for forty years’ service on the same farm.

24 June 1955 Buckland farm workers to receive awards

Mr Brock came to work at Bowden Farm for Mr George Heywood 40 years ago. As shepherd Mr Brock has charge of the flock of Devon Closewool ewes and Southdown rams.

Mr Prance has been 42 years at Burrough Farm, Buckland Brewer where he first worked for the late Mr Robert Tucker before the farm was bought by Mr George Heywood. He now works with the pedigree Ayrshire herd.

Torrington enterprise’s new extensions

Now one of the country’s biggest and most modern creameries

Born seventy years ago out of the enterprise of a Torrington grocer and provision merchant, Mr Robert Sandford, bartering groceries for butter, eggs and poultry from local farmers, the Torridge Vale Dairies’ factory has grown into one of the biggest and most modern creameries in the country.

24 June 1955 Torringtons enterprises new extensions

Fifty farms began supplying cream to the dairy in 1931 but now the company buys milk from some 2,600 farms, the collections by its fleet of 50 lorries along the network of roads over an area extending from Hartland to Lynton, down east of South Molton, to the boundaries of Okehampton and across to the coast in North Cornwall south of Bude and Marhamchurch.
