  • Christmas Eve at the Front

An interesting letter has just been received by Mrs Packer, of Broadclyst, from her husband, Corpl Packer of A Company, 1st Battalion Devonshire Regiment, who is serving with the Expeditionary Force in Northern France. In the course of a letter he describes a remarkable incident which occurred on Christmas Eve between the British and German trenches.

The house on the cliff edge known locally as ‘Spooky House’ or even ‘Haunted House’ , was built about 1885.

The road was especially built to enable access to the house and was initially known as Seafield Road; later it became Merley Road.

Traditions and skills still there!

Appledore yacht races

The races for model yachts at Appledore regatta call for considerable craftmanship, skill and ingenuity, spiced by friendly rivalry.

9 August 1968 Traditions and skills still there

Practically all the models are home-made, often incorporating features of special design. The picture illustrates Mr Horace Ford, of Torridge Road, Appledore, and his daughter Janet preparing their entry in the 3 ft. 6 in. class. Mr Ford comes of a well-known local boatbuilding family and not only made this model but also one of the winners in a class for smaller models

Variety in ‘summer’ weather

Variety in weather

It has been quite a week for variety in weather – occasional hot sunshine, exceptionally violent thunderstorms and periods of prolonged heavy rain, hailstones ‘as big as walnuts,’ flooding and hay and other crops damaged.

5 July 1968 Variety in summer weather

The vagaries of this summer so far are reflected in the above photograph taken at the donkey derby staged at Torrington.

It really was the last ‘time’!

Last call at Taddiport

On Tuesday night ‘Time, gentlemen, please,’ the call that has rung through the Buckingham Arms at Taddiport for considerably more than 100 years, was heard for the last time.

21 June 1968 It really was the last time

Owners of the inn, Whitbreads, have sold it and the licence is to be surrendered. But the purchaser is no stranger. He is Mr Jim Horrell, landlord of the Buckingham Arms for the past 12 years. The pub will be the farmhouse for the smallholding on which it is situated.
