Littleham cow tops 70 tons mark in milk production

Productive Friesian cow

This Friesian cow, Turmog Pyramid IV owned by Mr F. Peter Martin of Furlong, Littleham, topped the 70 tons mark of milk yielded in her 14½ years. For those who cannot imagine milk in tons, this cow has given 15,193 gallons or enough milk to fill 121,544 pint bottles.

Wilfred and Mabel visit schools and hospital

Housewives throng vantage points

Eager to catch a glimpse of one of the most famous radio and television partnership, Wilfred and Mabel Pickles, scores of housewives thronged vantage points when the couple paid visits in the town during Tuesday morning.

At Bideford Secondary Modern School, nearly 600 children were assembled into the main hall. Wilfred presented a special show for the school which was a mixture of ‘Have a Go’ and ‘Top of the Form’.

31.1.1958 Bideford Wilfred and Mabel Pickles

A large crowd watched the arrival of the party at Bideford and District Hospital where Wilfred and Mabel greeted all the 57 patients, followed by a visit to Stella Maris Convent School and the Town Hall for a reception in the Mayor’s Parlour.

Thorn Apple found in Littleham Conservatory

Beware this deadly plant

Lt.-Col. W.B. Churchill-Longman of Heale House, Littleham, displays a ‘deadly’ plant he has identified in his conservatory. It is the American thorn-apple which is described as very deadly to small children or in cattle. The foliage and seeds are deadly poisonous. The capsules are like those of a horse chestnut, green with spines, and attractive to children.

9 October 1959 Beware this deadly plant

Col. Churchill-Longman noticed the plant a short while ago when he removed a couple of cucumber plants and realised its serious nature.
