An interesting letter has just been received by Mrs Packer, of Broadclyst, from her husband, Corpl Packer of A Company, 1st Battalion Devonshire Regiment, who is serving with the Expeditionary Force in Northern France. Appledore RAF Officer awarded MBE

Rescued Man After Explosion

10.12.1954 William Lamey

Flying Officer John Henry William Lamey, of Appledore, has been elected a member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE), it was announced in the London Gazette of November 30th, for rescuing an unconscious engineman lying in burning oil after an explosion in the stand-by power house.
F/O Lamey, son of the late Mr and Mrs J H Lamey, of Newquay Street, Appledore, is an Old Boy of Bideford Grammar School. He is serving at No. 16 Maintenance Unit, RAF Stafford.
He married Miss Sheila Mary Barker, of Stone, Staffs, in 1947, and now lives with his wife’s parents at Meaford Avenue, Stone. They have two children, John and Jane.
The full Gazette article is dated 10 December 1954

Hillcliff Does Not Like New Street Sign

Residents of Hillcliff Terrace, Appledore, are reported to be annoyed because they claim that a new street sign ‘Irsha Street’ put up in the vicinity threatens their ‘independent existence’ and is likely to lead to confusion.

1967 Appledore

One of them told the Gazette they were contemplating sending a petition to Northam Urban Council about it. The attention of the Council officials, he said, had been drawn to the matter when the sign was being erected, but nothing had been done to alter it. In both the Ordnance Survey and the Electors’ List Hillcliff Terrace, which has a dozen houses, was mentioned separately and not with Irsha Street, he added.
The Clerk to Northam Urban Council, Mr Alan Gardner, said there no intention of removing use of the name Hillcliff Terrace but merely to indicate the extent of Irsha Street.
Late news is that although the new sign is to remain a Hillcliff Terrace name plate is to be put up as well.
