Torrington’s Good Day

Coronation day at Torrington began with a united service at the Parish Church, the official parade being accompanied by Torrington Voluntary Silver Band.

12.6.1953 Torrington

The service was conducted by Rev C J Barker accompanied by Revs Lloyd Evans, A M Granger and T H Sheriff. The Mayor, Mr J H Long, addressed the Coronation parade.
The weather vastly improved during the afternoon and there was brilliant sunshine for the sports at the Secondary Modern School field.
Adult events results included: W Hopkins; H Baker; B Hearn; D Auberton; F J Gent; R Bennett; C Mules; S Stone; Harold Weeks; J Hill; M Daniels; H Oke; C Ayre; G Baker; C Mules; F Cornish and daughter; W J White and daughter; S Stone and daughter; C Oke, B Hearn.
Free teas for men over 65 and women over 60 were given at the Drill Hall. Children up to school leaving age received a bag of sweets with a Coronation mug as well as their teas.
The only street party on that day was held in Well Street and was staged in two sittings. At the East End the organisers were Mrs T Sussex and Mrs A Jury and a small committee. At the West End of the street, Mrs Alice Redd was crowned ‘Queen’ by Miss Pat Harris. Organisers of the West End party were Mrs G Weeks and Miss P Harris and a small committee.
Mrs George Greenwood entertained on her banjo, Mrs P Reed proposed the toast and Mrs L Drayton responded.
The entries for the carnival procession was rather disappointing. Highlight of the Carnival was the revival of Fred Karno’s Army, under Captain F S Kelly with their Regimental Band, under ‘Bandmaster’ C Mules. In the rear trailed the ‘Scrumpy Wagon’ under Sergt-Major Ernie Quick.
The children’s classes were judged by Mr and Mrs C T Davenport and Mrs and Mrs J Hampshire. Winners were: Jennifer Hoyle; Sandra and Ann Moreley; Jill Martin; Jean Mitchell; David Johns; Rosemary Thacker; Alison Johns and Ann Smith; David Martin; Ann Biddick and Elizabeth White; Lilian Hopkins; Wendy Rowtcliffe; Roy Copp, Dudley Westlake and David Kelly; Mrs E Babbington and Mr A Hoyle; Mrs E M Paton.
After olde tyme and modern dancing in the Square, the day ended when the band led floral dancers to the Old Bowling Green where the Mayoress of Torrington lit the mammoth bonfire.

On The Sunnyside Of Success

With the sun adding to the gaiety of its decorations, Sunnyside, Bideford E, looks a picture, and well upheld its name by being awarded first prize in the competition organised by Bideford and District Chamber of Trade for the best decorated street at Coronation time.

12.6.1953 Sunnyside Bideford

There were large baskets of flowers hanging from the middle of the street with laurel arches at each end, window boxes on every house, and Royal portraits, flags and bunting.

Street Parties Celebrate

Special thoughts for children and old people

12.6.1953 Street Parties1

In the past ten days street teas to celebrate the Coronation have been organised throughout the district. These happy community expressions of loyalty and neighbourliness are in the long-standing tradition of Coronation and jubilee celebrations.
Civil leaders, notably the Mayor and Mayoress of Bideford, have assiduously visited the many parties in response to cordial invitations and have brought messages of congratulations and good wishes coupled with references to the significance to all of the great occasion of Coronation.
Women’s Street Committees brought to triumphant completion the carefully laid plans for bumper spreads and generous contributions were made by friends.
Victory Conga – a jovial street supper was held in Sunnyside on the eve of Coronation Day. The Mayor and Mayoress paid a visit, together with the Town Clerk, and sat down to a supper of ham and salad, with trifles, strawberry flans and cream. Mr Copp proposed thanks to the Mayor and Mayoress, which was seconded by Mr C Lamey. The Mayoress was presented with a bouquet by Miss M Mills. Mr Frank Squires led all the residents in a victory conga.
Films and Fireworks – games, singing, films and fireworks followed a Coronation tea for residents, and particularly the children and older folk of Pitt Lane, Myrtle Grove and Myrtle Gardens held in Gunstone School on June 4. The Mayor and Mayoress were welcomed and twins Jennifer and Christopher Pugh presented them with a button-hole and spray. Prizewinners were Mrs Bonney and Mrs Jordon, the tickets being drawn by the Mayor and John Stone whose birthday it was that day.
Lower Cleave Houses – a very enjoyable party was held at Lower Cleave Houses on Wednesday, more than 70 children and adults sat down to tea. Sports, a Punch and Judy Show by Mr Dark and a new sixpence were given to each child. A sing-song was followed by supper at which Mrs Rodgerman, the oldest guest, proposed the toast to The Queen and thanked the organisers.
Willett Street – Seventy-six children were present at the Willett Street area Coronation tea on June 4th. The special guests attending included the Mayor and Mayoress, Mr and Mrs F C Backway, Rev and Mrs A J Herring, Mrs G Little and Mr A R L Adams. To conclude, each child was given a Coronation souvenir, chocolate and an orange. Thanks are due to Mesdames Heard, Gurnhill, Bennett, Needs, Smith, Lucas, Evans, Lang and all others who helped.
