Allhalland Street – then and now!

Street view in 1900

The photos above show Allhalland street of 50 years ago, and when compared with the recent photo below, it will be noted that there has been little structural change but a great increase in the number of little shops of varying interest.

25 July 1952 Allhalland Street then and now

In the centuries that have passed this was the street so well-known to the sailors who used the port and to the townspeople . Long before the Quay as at present was built, it was along Allhalland Street the people went from the High Street to the Town Hall, the Grammar School, the Parish Church and the Bridge.

Making way for the double-deckers

Road widening in Northam

During the past week, work has been progressing on the widening of the corner at the junction of Burrough road with Castle street, Northam, so as to make it easier for double-decked omnibuses to use the Lenard road route on the way to Appledore and so by-pass narrow Cross Street.

27 June 1952 Making way for the double deckers

When the work is complete the buses will return to this alternative route on the run from Bideford to Appledore. Buses returning from Appledore to Bideford will continue to use the Cross Street route.

New look in the hayfields

Harvest at Westward Ho!

Hayfields in the district are being given a ‘new look’ when the Vendeuvre hay baling machine gets to work, rectangular bales taking the place of the familiar rounded pokes of hay. After the hay has been cut, dried and raked into rows stretching the length of the field, the Vendeuvre is brought in and picks up the hay, feeds it into the machine where a number of arms pummel the hay into tightly-packed rectangular bales which are then tied twice with cord and deposited on the ground.

27 June 1952 New look in the hayfields

This photograph was taken in a three-acre field at Westward Ho! which yielded nearly 400 bales of hay.
