National award goes to locally-trained horse 11th June 1971

National award goes to locally trained horseGolden Batman, the pride and joy of the point-to-point stables run by Mr & Mrs Anthony Hartnoll at East Barton, Horwood, has capped a great season by winning a national award.

Golden Batman who was sired by Golden Surprise and bred by Mr Leonard Bond, of Bradworthy, was spotted in a field in Cornwall by Mr Hartnoll.  Mr C M C Hancock, a Truro solicitor and point-to-point enthusiast purchased him.

Miss Pennell examined the scholars of the Council School in religious knowledge on Wednesday morning. 

Special intercession services for the war were held at St Michael’s Church, Horwood, and also at St Thomas a Becket’s Church, Newton Tracey, on Sunday last. 

Gunner G Gill (RFA), only son of Mr Gill, Hunters’ Inn, Newton Tracey, had been sent to a Bournemouth hospital, suffering from a severe wound in his left foot. Gunner Gill had been in France about six months. 

A successful whist drive and dance, organised by Mrs E Cawsey, ‘Prospect’, in aid of the British Red Cross, took place at Newton Cross House, by kind permission of Mr J Paton. There was a large attendance, and a goodly sum was raised. Mr James Oatway, Lovacott, was an efficient MC. The prizes for the whist drive were given by Mesdames Dene and Balman, and Mr H Symons. The winners were: Miss Daisy Youatt, Mr E Cawsey (playing as a lady); Miss W Brace; J Andrew; Coates; W Hooper. Miss Rocky (Huntshaw)...
