During a discussion at Hatherleigh Parish Council on a proposal to have 'Welcome to Hatherleigh' signs erected at the entrances to the town, the question of whether Hatherleigh possessed a Coat of Arms was raised. Members felt that the town's Arms - if it has them - could be incorporated in the signs.
It was agreed to obtain designs and prices of signs and to ascertain the procedure for getting a Coat of Arms if the town is not already entitled to one.

Nothing had given him greater pleasure or pride than this latest addition to the market, said Mr J Gordon Vick at the opening of Hatherleigh's £175,000 abattoir by Mr Ivor Martin, principal scientific officer of the Meat Research Institute, Langport.
The latest project, he said had been thought about for a good many years, and he was grateful to all those who had supported him.
