Nearly 400 Runs in Under Four Hours - September 1961

Nearly 400 Runs in Under Four Hours

Nearly 400 runs were scored in under four hours at Bideford on Saturday when Bideford Casuals met Pilton.
The visitors set the pace when they rattled up 189 for 3 in the two hours before tea. Although the rate in the first hour was almost sedate, 55 runs only being scored, the advent of T Treloar (81, 15 fours) made up for this. Together with K Pedlar (58 n.o.) they put on 117 for the third wicket.
Set to score 190 in two hours, Casuals took up the challenge, the architect of their five-wicket victory undoubtedly being John Haywood (106 in 104 minutes, 15 fours, two sixes). He kept Casuals ahead of the clock right from the start.

Dunn's bowling does it

Austin Dunn, coming on to bowl after 90 minutes, struck his best form this season for Bidedford Casuals when they met Dartmouth on Sunday. He shattered the middle-order batting, taking five wickets in 15 balls, Dartmouth falling from 73 for 5 to 73 for 9. Dartmouth struggled from the start against some effective bowling by A Joynson (2-17) and J Walker (1-28), and were dismissed for only 82. Casuals knocked off the runs in 72 minutes for the loss of Mike Quick (37). John Heywood made 29 n.o. and D Williams took one for 35 in 11 overs for Dartmouth.

Victory came easy to Bideford and District C.C. on Sunday when they entertained Ilfracombe at Westward Ho! The visitors were shot out for 99 (Rod Beer 23, Roy Staddon 24; Tony Marsh 3-22, Whalley 4-30), but Bideford were responsible for several dropped catches. Roy Bird (25), Mervyn Bird (23), Peter Adams (23) and Pete Durant (15 n.o.) were the chief sources of Bideford's five-wicket victory. John Lovering took 4-19 for 'Combe.
