Boarder still critical 25th June 1982
A Grenville College boarder who fell 60 feet down cliffs at Hartland was still critically ill in Freedom Fields Hospital, Plymouth.
Julian Bairstow, 12, sustained serious head and internal injuries when he plunged on to rocks near Blagdon Farm west of Hartland Point. Pupils Ashley Gray, Shaun Robins and Tim Leech kept him breathing until he could be stretchered aboard a helicopter from RAF Chivenor and airlifted to the North Devon District Hospital, Barnstaple.
The three boys were later praised by the Chivenor winchman. He told the College's headmaster Mr David Powell-Price: "They did everything they could have done and they did it right."
