Conducting his final services as Vicar of Appledore next weekend, the Rev Donald Peyton Jones has issued a special invitation not only to regular worshippers, but to all have been married, confirmed or baptised there during his five year ministry.
Guest speaker at a harvest thanksgiving next Friday will be Bishop Wilfred Westall, now retired, who installed Mr Peyton Jones as Appledore’s Vicar.
Mr Peyton Jones begins work as honorary chaplain to the Mission for Seamen in the Port of Plymouth on October 1. He believes that at 65 he has been called to work among seamen and also that Appledore and Lundy need a younger priest.
His move will mean a sad parting for him with his ‘faithful steed’ – the horse which has become almost as well known as the Vicar himself on their treks around the parish. Mr Peyton Jones will now be taking to the sea aboard a sailing boat.
