Landcross

Landcross 01

Landcross, or Lancras, in the hundred of Shebbear and in the deanery of Hertland, lies about two miles and a half from Bideford. The manor belonged, anciently, tot he family of Beaumont, from whom it passed to Basset, and from Basset, by marriage, to Pomeroy. It was afterwards in Giffard; Sir John Rolle died seised of it in 1706; it is now the property of Lord Rolle, who is the patron of the rectory. In the parish-church is the monument of Anthony Giffard, lord of the manor, who died in 1649. General Monnk appears to have been a native of this village; he was baptized at Lancras, December 11, 1608.
