First Festival Win For Hartland Band - 18th March 1977
Returning to competitions after a gap of several years, Hartland Band achieved its first festival win ever.
At the South West Brass Band Association's Spring festival at Barnstaple they were first in section three's test piece and second in the march. In addition, euphonium player Dave Webber won the soloist prize in his section and there was, unusually, a special mention for the band's percussion player, RAF man Peter Last.
Mr Eric Slade, recently appointed musical director of Hartland Band, said the band's successes were the result of three month's hard work.
Bideford Band scored a fine winning double. Bideford schoolgirl Lynda Downing, who plays the flugelhorn was judged the best soloist.
Although Bideford Junior Band were unplaced in their section, John Raymont on the euphonium was awarded the prize for the best soloist.
