Buildings in Calf Street, Torrington,
which have been put to various uses over the past century, have been given a new lease of life as a warehouse for gloves manufactured at Torrington and other parts of the South-West.
Mr C Ebsworthy, a director of glove manufacturers, James Tapscott and Sons Ltd, of New Street, and a prime mover in the new enterprise, told the Gazette that the building was the former ‘British School’ and had since served at various times as a headquarters for the Salvation Army and as a Home Guard drill hall, beside being disused for some time. Now, in addition to the warehouse there will also be three flats.
Agents and wholesalers in Gloving Cocksedge and Kither Ltd, of London, whose managing director also holds a similar position with Messrs Tapscott’s, have set up the ware house in Torrington after having had to give up other accommodation in the City owing to a clearance scheme. Their registered head office remains in London.
The Mayor and Mayoress of Torrington, Ald and Mrs F R Hodge, and members of the Town Council were among those invited to an opening ceremony for the new warehouse and are seen inspecting it with directors.
