Most of N Devon lands to be sold
24 Parishes Concerned
Tenants of farms, cottages and other property over a wide area of North Devon have received formal notification this week from the directors of the Clinton (Devon) Estates Let, that owing to the death of Lord Clinton it has become necessary to dispose of the greater part of the North Devon estate.
A total of just over 22,000 acres is involved including the majority of the parishes of Merton, Petrockstow, Sheepwash and Huish, and lands in the parishes of Langtree, Frithelstock, Weare Giffard, Huntshaw, Chittlehampton, Umberleigh, Beaford, Buckland Filleigh, Little Torrington, Meeth, Peters Marland, Sheepwash, Chittlehamholt, High Bickington, St Giles, Swimbridge, Thornbury and Yarnscombe.
As well as a large area of the farm land around the town, including Beam mansion and lands, the Globe Hotel and a number of cottages in Great Torrington are the property of the Clinton estate.
No decision has yet been made public as to which, if any, of the property on the estate, including Lord Clinton’s rebuilt 18th century mansion Heanton Satchville, is to be excluded from the sale.
