Bideford dustmen

The two men in the photograph, probably taken some fifty or sixty years ago, were the dustmen of a bygone age when the Bideford health authority was known as the Bideford Local Board.

The two men are Mr Fred Friendship and Mr Billy Hopgood although it is not known which is which. The photograph was loaned by Mr F.C. Perkins of Mill Street, Bideford, whose shop is now situated in the premises just visible on the left.

At this month’s meeting Bideford Town Council decided that the pre-war practice of sweeping certain streets on Sundays should be resumed.
