Old view of Quay and High Street

Although the corner of High Street and Bideford Quay has not changed so very much structurally in this picture, nowadays we seldom see the roadway so empty of traffic.

Presumably the chains across the Quay were there to prevent the recurrence of such a tragedy as happened when a coach laden with people came down High Street, failed to negotiate the corner and went over the Quayside.
