The clock wins in bridge race
The East-the-Water community association revived racing across Bideford Bridge to beat the striking of the Parish Church clock at 8 o’clock last Thursday evening. Bridge racing was last held in 1936 and this time it will be from west to east.
Many hundreds enjoyed the novel sporting event. Four selected local amateur athletes raced and the winner was the oldest competitor, W.'Bill' Vickery, aged 28, in a time of 24 2/5 seconds. However the strike of eight was over in 21 4/5 seconds.
