Generous gifts to Bideford

Representatives of every walk of life in the Borough were present at the opening of the Burton Art Gallery in Victoria Park, Bideford. The art gallery building is the gift to the Borough of Mr and Mrs Thomas Burton in memory of their daughter Mrs Mary Meredith and houses a valuable collection of paintings and objets d’art given by Mr and Mrs Hubert Coop and further objets d’art presented by the family of the late Mr F.A. Bishop.

The opening ceremony was performed by Sir Arthur Watson, a brother-in-law of Mr Hubert Coop and who was at one time resident in the district.
