Attempted dog rescue 

Before the whole school, Alan J. Hewett, aged 10, of Barton Tors, Bideford, was presented with the RSPCA Certificate of Merit and a book on animals by the Mayor of Bideford (Mr W. H. Short) at East-the-Water County Primary School, Bideford, last Tuesday.

The presentation was in recognition of his courage in attempting to rescue a dog from a stream near Bideford on 28 January.
