Old houses in Bideford

The shop and two houses in the photograph were demolished about 60 years ago and used to stand at the top of High Street just in front of the Rectory Wall and face towards Providence Row.

The group of buildings were colloquially known as ‘The Island’. Their actual position can be seen by the lamp post which stands on the same spot as the present post which is on a small island in the middle of the roadway between the top of Pitt Lane and High Street.
