Firstly, where is it; secondly, from what vantage point was it taken?
The scene is Stoke, Hartland, and nesting in the valley of wooded slopes is Hartland Abbey. Founded in the reign of Henry II, it continued as an abbey until its surrender by the 16th abbot in February 1539. Subsequently it became a private residence and is now the home of Major D.F.B. Stucley.
The photograph was taken from the top of the handsome tower of St Nectan’s Church.
