View of Bridge Street
This vista shows Bridge Street leading down to the Long Bridge and the river Torridge.
Up to about 1830 it was paved with cobbles and the top half had steps . After dark these steps were dangerous and after reports that a man received fatal injuries falling down them, the Town Council had the gradient evened up as now without interfering with the houses on either side but protecting the traffic by railings. Posts were placed at the top to prevent wheeled traffic. These were removed when the market was built.
