Bideford coal merchants beat rail strike

Although the district receives its house coal by ship, boiler fuels for cookers etc. normally come by rail. In order to overcome difficulties caused by the rail strike, a Bideford firm of coal merchants, Messr. Littlejohns Brothers sent three lorries to Cardiff last week to seek additional supplies of this type of fuel, the demand for which does not drop as much in the summer as that for ordinary house coal.

The lorries left on Thursday morning and returned in the early hours of Saturday morning with about 17 tons of boiler fuel which, it was stated, had eased the situation for this week.
