First telex machine in Bideford
Miss Yvonne Johns watches her colleague Mrs Eileen Woodland practising on what looks like an ‘overgrown’ typewriter at the offices of the blouse and dress-making factory of Jaquemand Ltd., Westcombe Bideford.
The ‘overgrown typewriter’ is a telex, one of the latest types of teleprinter. The machine, the first of its kind to be used anywhere in the Bideford district, was installed by the London managing director or Jaquemand Ltd. After contact has been made with another machine a message is typed out and appears on the ‘receiving’ machine’s paper fixed in its roller.
