Traffic flowing again
Traffic has been flowing over the bridge since the repaired section passed with flying colours a stringent test on Friday morning. A full 150 tons in the form of 10 loaded lorries were stationed on the span while surveyors with level measured the deflection on each side of the bridge. They found it to be about a quarter of an inch, which they described as highly satisfactory.
There was no formal opening, but the Mayor (Mr Harold Blackmore) was among the first to drive across and back again. It was a happy day for the people of Bideford, he said.
