Taking the mickey out of Beeching

Several men who took a couple of days off work to prepare an entry for Torrington Carnival were rewarded on Saturday when their tableau ‘The last train from Torrington’ won the News of the World trophy for the best entry and was awarded first prize in the humorous section. The tableau which was a take-off of the Beeching Report was entered by two Torrington firms, Messrs. Alexander Bros., Buildings and Messrs. Sing and Gist, plumbers. The idea for the entry was not thought of until the previous Thursday evening.
