Young ‘Snowy’ of Buckleigh is being trained
Snowy, a six-month-old white billy goat is being trained by his mistress to carry her shopping with the aid of two panniers. His mistress is Mrs Ruth Werner of ‘Donard’, Buckleigh, Westward Ho! and young Snowy is about to realise that to reach home from Westward Ho! entails the climb up Fosketh or Stanwell hills.
Mrs Werner is going to fasten two small panniers over Snowy’s back and as he gets accustomed to them the weight will be gradually increased until, it is hoped, he will be able to manage 5 or 6 lb. at one time. Mrs Werner told the Gazette, ‘The idea of training him may seem peculiar to some people, but after all it is a very common practice in other European countries. It’s just that I’m tired of lugging heavy shopping baskets up from Westward Ho!’
