Joshua Petheridge Downing – Horwood, Devon - Brass Plate
A steam roller brass plate and booklets were donated by Richard Sandercock on 6 January 2015. His great-grandfather was Richard Dingle (Dingles Heritage Fairground at Lifton) who had 3 sons (no issue) and 1 daughter who married a Sandercock.
JP Downing of Horwood, Devon, ordered a Clayton and Shuttleworth steam roller (TA6236) from Dingles in 1913 – there was a legal requirement to have identification of the owner on the roller, hence the plaque.

1891 Census shows:
John Petheridge Downing (aged 35) married to Cora S Downing (aged 32) with 3 offspring – John Richard Downing (aged 10), Cora T Downing (aged 8 – 1882) and Joshua Downing (aged 1 – 1889). All living at East Barton, Horwood, Newton Tracey.
Later investigations identify Cora T Downing as Cora I Downing, Cora T Downind and Cora I Donning.
1901 Census shows:
As above with Richard C Downing (aged 2) and Penelope Rice Downing (aged 83). Cora T Downing still at Horwood.
John Petheridge Downing died in 1924 aged 69 – registered in Barnstaple. Joshua Downing died 1966 – registered in Barnstaple
1901 Census details an Ernest Charles Eveleigh (aged 19 - born Islington about 1882 – undergraduate at Oxford) boarding at Ilfracombe Hotel with other members of the Eveleigh family.
1911 Census (recorded 2 April) - Ernest Eveleigh, single, gentleman farmer and son of Head (10 Park Square West, Regents Park) – Irene Downing, aged 34 and single, from Horwood visiting.
Cora married Ernest C Eveleigh in the second quarter of 1911. Michael Eveleigh born 1914 – registered in first quarter in Barnstaple
Cora T Eveleigh died in 1967. An Ernest Charles Eveleigh died 4 February 1927, aged 45 (St Thomas, Devon). Wear House, Countess Wear, Devon (left to widow Cora Irene Downing)
Eveleigh Finance Ltd now occupy East Barton Farm.
