Mr Jack Rowe, the well known Northam golfer, who for 48 years has been professional at Ashdown Forest Club, told Bideford Rotarians recently of an incident with the famous British Prime Minsiter, Mr A J Balfour (later Earl Balfour), who used to play golf with him.

He asked him once: 'What is there about golf that makes poeple like you take all this trouble when you so much to think about'. Mr Balfour replied: 'Let me tell you friend, if every question in the world was so easy to answer as that there would be no difficult questions at all'.
A founder member of Northam Artisans' Golf Club, Mr Rowe is chairman of the Board of Directors of the Professional Golfers Cooperative Association. For many years his mother managed Torridge House for Capt Molesworth, affectionately known as 'the Old Mole' whose golfing exploits have been the subject of interesting reminiscences in 'Torridge Chat' recently.
