Bideford businessman Mr Alan Smith of Heale House, Littleham, has been presented with the Chief Constable’s certificate for good citizenship.

The award was made as a result of Mr Smith’s action when he went to the aid of a man under attack at the West end of Bideford Bridge.
Two assailants, who were armed with a metal bar and a hammer, drove off after Mr Smith had snatched away the bar but he managed to make a note of the car number which he gave to the police. The two men concerned were both given 18 months suspended sentences at Barnstaple Crown Court.
