Tennis Club’s First Woman President

26.3.1965 Tennis presentation

An inscribed table lighter was presented to the retiring president, Mr Eric Westoby, at the annual meeting of Westward Ho! Tennis Club.

He has been actively connected with the club since its formation 20 years ago.

The new president, and the first woman to hold the office, is Mrs Hazel Stephens, of Park Avenue, Westward Ho! She has been a member of the club for about 15 years and was a playing member until two seasons ago.

Other officers elected were: chairman, Mr R H Clarke; hon. Secretary, Mr P Colwill; hon. Treasurer, Mr E Hubber; captain, Mr D Worwood; fixtures secretary, Mrs D Worwood (Cleave Lodge, Northam).

Mrs Worwood commented upon the shortage of opposition in providing fixtures for the club likely to be experienced in the coming year and announced that they were trying to arrange matches with South Devon clubs in the Dawlish and Exmouth areas.

The chairman announced that only Ashleigh Road Tennis Club and Westward Ho! would be entering the Houldsworth Cup competition this year and it was decided that the club would only enter one team. He stressed that new members of the club would be very welcome.

A flourishing junior section was reported under the general supervision of Mr Fred Pitman, and the age limit of the section was confirmed at 11-16. Starting date for this section is May 8th.

This year, for the first time, the club is to hold an annual dinner. October is the month suggested and at the dinner the club trophies will be presented.
