Gay Caps For Bollards On The Quay

    30.1.1959 Bideford bollards1

When they are not in use for mooring, bollards on Bideford Quayside have proved something of a hazard for parking motorists and so 32 of these metal ‘protectors’ have been provided and made their appearance during the past week.

Gaily painted in red and white, they look like large dunce’s caps. To prevent boisterous spirits from trying them on they are secured by chains and padlocks. When a ship comes in the bollard doffs its hat – as it should do to greet a lady.

One possible snag is that some thoughtless people will

Promise is kept - after 18 years

    15.3.1963 Promise kept

A promise made to a Bideford family has been kept - more than 17 years after. When, following VE Day, Mr Frank Willanneuva, a member of the United States Forces, returned to his home country, he promised Mrs M J Durant and her daughters Phyllis and Margaret, at whose home, 'Darracott', Abbotsham Road, he had been billeted for nearly a year, that he would 'write soon'. But then Mr Willanneuva, who hailed from Mexico, could write little English. Now, writing from 700 South Street, Tulare, California, he has invited Miss Phyllis Durant to visit him.

But whereas it is anticipated that the new workshops will be in operation by about September of next year, it will be 1965 before local telephone subscribers are able to dial the numbers they require.

The entrance door had to be widened by the sub-contractors, Messrs A F Beer and Son, of Bideford, and then steel rollers used to push the heavy door inside. The photograph shows Messrs Littlejohns' new 'Jumbo' mobile crane being used to lift the new doors. However, apart from one incident, when, describes an

A by-law aimed at stopping nude bathing on Devon beaches has been adopted by Devon County Council.

      25.1.1963 no nudes on beaches

The move follows complaints from people living at South Devon coast resorts.
Making the recommendation to the Legal and General Purposes Committee, the Council said that complaints had been received about indecent behaviour adjacent to Slapton Sands. They considered that the by-law should apply to all rural areas in Devon.
Under the suggested by-law it will become an offence punishable by a fine not exceeding £5 for any person in any street or public place wilfully and indecently to expose himself.

On Sunday evening the Bideford Town Silver Band, under the direction of Bandmaster J Heal, gave a popular musical programme in the Palace Theatre Bideford.
Despite the heavy rain, there was a surprisingly large audience who thoroughly enjoyed the excellently arranged programme. During the cornet solos, by D Pope, their accompaniment was all that could be desired. Mr Heal wielded the baton with his usual efficiency and both conductor and band were fully in sympathy.
The special attraction was the engagement of Miss Gwendoline Fugler. Mr R Harper was an able accompanist at the piano.

Fifty years service as a minister has just been completed by the Rev R H Parsons, of Bethel Church, East-the-Water, Bideford, and the occasion was celebrated by a family social gathering at the Bethel on Monday, November 4th.

1946 Rev Parsons

Beginning his career in 1896 as an Evangelist, Mr Parsons took over a Mission Hall at Sudbrook, and later returned to London to join the Lectures Department of the National Sunday School Union, and worked with the Mission at Paradise Row, Stockwell. In 1905 he was appointed secretary of the All Nations Missionary Union, and in 1906 he was baptised and ordained, and went to the North Brixton Baptist Church. Mr Parsons came to Bethel in 1933, where he will be long remembered for his organisation and energy in the improvement schemes he has put into force. He was also responsible for the formation of the Bideford Veteran’s Club, which was founded to provide shelter and recreation for the old men congregating round Bideford Bridge, and has now a membership of thirty.
At Mr Parsons’ jubilee gathering, the principal speaker was Rev G F Dempster, a former colleague of Mr Parsons and later Welfare Superintendant of the British Sailors’ Society. He preached to a large congregation on the Sunday morning and evening.
On the Monday evening the chair was taken by Mr Horace Mann, Barnstaple, who gave a much appreciated address. All were delighted to welcome again the Rev R Pyke, who led with the Scriptures and commendary prayer. Mr W T Braddick, president of the Bideford and District Free Church Federal Council, brought greetings from that body, and the Rev Bertram F Hardy (Appledore Baptist0 spoke on behalf of the clergy and ministers’ fraternals, of which Mr Parsons has been secretary for thirteen years.
Mrs Parsons received gifts from the various societies of the Church, and then gifts from friends were received. Members and friends of Bethel had already given a handsome gift to Mr and Mrs Parsons.
The Rev B Headlam, who worked with Mr Parsons in Brixton and Battersea some forty years before, paid a surprise visit from London, and spoke in high esteem of his association with Mr Parsons.
At the close of the inspiring evening, ladies of the Church provided refreshments.
